studentatlaw.co.uk - choose a firm

Stage 1

Before you begin your search for a training contract you need to think about several factors. Failure to consider your options at an early stage can have damaging consequences in an interview and could result in your wasting time and effort looking in the wrong places.

In this section, I have adapted the steps I undertook when looking for a training contract.

  1. First consider your personality without reference to the legal field
  1. Next, think about your personality and your ambitions with reference to the legal field.

So now you know about you.  Put that to one side for a moment and now think about the following:

  1. What type of firm do you want to join?
  1. Think about why that firm is suitable for you.  Relate this back to your skills which you considered in stages 1 and 2.
  1. Think about whether that firm is one in which you could develop your career.  Think about what you offer that firm in terms of both present application and future long term benefits

Great, by now you should have a good idea of type of firms you would like to join and why, you're now ready for stage 2.
